Chicken Wings: The Lord of the Rings Online

Hands down, this has to be my favorite recipe from The Lord of the Rings Online Apprentice Cooking Tier. The game has so much fun incorporating this beloved farmyard animal into its lore and game-play, and this recipe for chicken wings can be bartered from the Quartermaster at the Hobnanigans field.

Hobnanigans is a special event where players compete in teams of two in a kind of hockey-format. It is often called “Chicken Ball” or “Chicken Relay.”

For today’s recipe, I am using four pounds chicken wings, roasted at a high temperature and flipped regularly throughout the process to ensure even cooking. This technique, mixed with a simple, sweet and spicy stovetop sauce, makes enough to feed an entire team!

My version of the delicious Chicken Wings recipe from The Lord of the Rings Online adds an Indian-twist (garam masala, mango chutney) to the original concept.

Ingredients

  • Wings:
  • 2 Tbl. all purpose flour
  • 1 Tbl. garam masala
  • 4 lbs. chicken wing
  • Sauce:
  • 2 Tbl. Cholula original hot sauce
  • 2 Tbl. salted butter
  • 4 Tbl. mango chutney (can substitute apricot jam)

Instructions

1

Preheat oven to 500F. In a large bowl, whisk together flour and garam masala. Add chicken wings (in batches) tossing to coat. Transfer wings to two baking sheets lined in parchment paper. Repeat with remaining wings.

2

Bake wings for 45 minutes, flipping every fifteen minutes (very important!).

3

While wings are baking, melt butter in a large pot—I use a large Dutch oven, which is perfect for this size of dish. Add hot sauce and chutney, whiskey to combine until fully integrated. Cook for several minutes, or until bubbly and turn heat to very low (just enough to keep the sauce warm).

4

Once chicken is cooked, transfer wings to sauce in batches. Toss to coat wings evenly and plate. Repeat with remaining wings.

5

Serve with a garnish such as green onions or cilantro and your favorite creamy dressing.
