Strawberry Buns: The Lord of the Rings Online

Strawberry Buns are a seasonal recipe you can buy in Minas Tirith during the Midsummer Festival. Relatively cheap by festival standards (only 1 festival token!), this recipe can be crafted at the lowest cooking tier, Apprentice Cook.

Unlike most cooking recipes in the game, this recipe requires you to buy all of the ingredients in one large kit, “Strawberry Bun Baking Kit,” which can be purchased for 2 Midsummer Tokens. While the recipe doesn’t tell you exactly what or how much to mix, it has a lovely description of the components:

“Butter, honey, a mix of barley and wheat flours, strawberry jam, some spices, and a notecard with instructions.”

This description affords any cook a wonderful opportunity to get creative. I was excited by the idea of using honey and spices to create something you would see at a fancy hobbit tea or summer feast. I’ve stayed true to the original recipe by making sure allspice is featured in both the dough and the glaze for this bun. Strawberry jam, of course, is a must.

LTOTROFAM, please consider this my “notecard” with instructions!

Ingredients

  • Buns
  • 1 cup + 1 Tbl. milk, warmed to about 105-110F
  • 2 tsps. yeast
  • 3.5 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • ½ tsp. allspice
  • ½ tsp. nutmeg
  • ½ tsp. ginger
  • ¼ tsp. cardamom
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • ¼ cup butter, softened
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup currants or raisins
  • ¼ cup candied orange peel
  • one orange, zested
  • one lemon, zested
  • Glaze
  • ½ tbl. golden syrup or honey
  • 1 ½ tbl. caster sugar
  • ½ tsp. allspice
  • dash of cinnamon
  • 1-2 Tbl. fresh orange juice

Instructions

1

In a large bowl, combine milk and yeast, whisking gently. Set aside until activated (foaming), about 5-10 minutes.

2

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together dry ingredients: flour, cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, ginger, cardamom, and salt.

3

In a standing mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, beat together sugar and butter until fluffy. Add egg and beat to combine.

4

Pour activated yeast mixture into prepared sugar mixture and stir until well-combined. Slowly add in dry ingredients, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed.

5

Fold in dried fruit (currants or raisins) and orange and lemon zest. Mix until fully incorporated.

6

Cover dough with plastic wrap or a wet tea towel and allow to rise until doubled in size (about 1 hour). Punch down dough and turn out onto a lightly floured surface.

7

Preheat oven to 400F. Divide dough into 12 evenly sized balls and place on two parchment lined baking sheets, about 1.5-inches apart. Leave to rise for another 30-45 minutes or until doubled in size.

8

Bake for about 20 minutes or until the dough is golden brown and cooked all the way through. You can check your dough’s doneness by using an electric thermometer. 190F means the dough is ready to come out of the oven.

9

While the rolls bake, prepare your glaze: lightly warm honey or golden syrup in a microwave-safe bowl or Pyrex measuring cup. Mix in caster sugar, cinnamon, and orange juice (one tablespoon at a time), mixing until the glaze is smooth and runny, but not watery or too thick to spread.

10

Gently brush the tops of your buns with the glaze. Serve with butter, jam, or your favorite sweet spread.
